When is ASRock going to figure out that your 24-pin connector doesn't belong in the middle of the board and SATA ports definitely don't belong by the rear panel.
I wish moderboard manufacturers would start making motherboard without any PCI slots. They are starting to become quite old and I have no need for them anymore.
Not that they should remove the PCI on all their cards, but I would like to see a few without them.
Many business's still use PCI slots for a wide variety of hardware to save money. Any old technology is going to be supported until the majority of the market catches up to it, that's just a fact of life. Many peripheral manufacturers were making PCI cards (and still do) like TV tuners.
Not to mention there's the issue of other countries that don't upgrade anywhere near as often still needing that support for when they do.
Yes, I know PCI is important for many. I don't want PCI to be gone from all cards. But for those who don't want PCI, shouldn't there at least be one card on the market without PCI?
Spot on Gannon. Where I live, there are quite a number of peripherals that are just not available (or not sold here) in PCI-e like TV tuners and other expansion devices. Took us a while to get rid of the ISA interface, don't think PCI will be out in 5 years even.
It's worth noting that while ISA was a very old architecture with a lot of limitations, PCI isn't nearly as bad. There are tons of things that don't need anything more than PCI bandwidth. (Do we really need PCIe USB cards, or PCIe COM/LPT port cards?)
Plus, if you want to add more PCIe slots, you have to modify the chipset to support more PCIe lanes, and then you need to support splitting up the lanes into a certain number of slots. Many chipsets support around 20 to 24 PCIe lanes, with 16 of those dedicated to one x16 slot for graphics. I would rather have a few PCI slots than to have a system with 1x16, 1x4, and 6x1.
Finally, there's the big question of what you need all those slots for. Truthfully, there aren't that many cards besides GPUs and occasionally sound cards that I plug in to a modern system. A few people might like RAID adapters, but such users are in the minority (i.e. less than 1% of computers have a dedicated RAID card I'm sure). The only reason I still need an ATX size case at all is to comfortably run and cool CrossFire/SLI setups.
Some products should continue to support PCI and other legacy connectors but it would be nice to see a few products that eliminate those items.
Are companies worried that they will lose sales because their product doesn't have a serial port or a PS/2 mouse port? How about creating a product without all these legacy connectors and see how it sells?
Items that I will never use again: COM/LPT ports, joystick ort, PS/2 mouse port, PS/2 keyboard port (if someone could make an adapter for my keyboard), floppy and IDE connectors and VGA ports on LCD monitors and graphics cards.
There are a few things motherboard makers should remove, PCI slots now, IDE slots are still on some boards, etc.
I would hate to drop $200 on a board with "old" technology still attached to it myself. :P
You would what would be cool, if you can order custom motherboards, like you can with a whole computer. That would be badass, i would pay a slight premium to not have some stuff and replace it with something else useful to me :D yes i know never happen..
Anyhow, it would be really cool *if* the two Asrock motherboards with 6 memory slots would both take DDR2, and DDR3 at the same time. Somehow I suspect though this will n0t be the case. Would be cool to have a desktop board that was capable of hosting more than 4 DIMMs for obvious reasons ; )
I think what he meant was use DDR2 in the DDR2 slots and DDR3 in the DDR3 slots at the same time. For example, 2GB DDR2 and 4GB DDR3 would equal 6GB total system memory. That would be pretty cool but I still don't think it would happen.
Yeah... something is up with our admin engine that caused Gary to lose P3. He's in meetings right now, so I'm pulling the document until we get the text and images in there....
Or I suppose I can just delete page 3 for now (it's empty) and Gary can add it when he gets a chance.
