The curved screen was pretty cool. It let you use your peripheral vision to play which was pretty neat. Also, I saw it on the CES showfloor where there was less ambiant light inside of Dell's booth. Without the light on it, it was almost impossible to see the seems.
There was also a company demoing a curved projection screen for gaming (bigger curve than curved theater screens), but I had a major headache at that point and couldn't try it.
CES is like major information and sensory overload.
Time for one of us to get a vision check. (Oh... it IS time for me!)
Anyway, whatever they promised you, the pix clearly show a two-slot model.
PS: If you want to make a bizillion small articles, fine, but please hang them off a sub-page and don't spew them all over the AT "front page", pushing other articles off. Or link them as tiny URL's under a common box, not as endless full boxes.
My sympathies to whoever had to cover this seemingly dull event!
"If they slip up at this point we could see a much more protracted format war that does nothing but hurt consumers."
I don't see how monopolies are EVER good for the consumer. To think otherwise is absurd. Non-colluding competition is the only reason for companies to drive down prices.
If it weren't for HD DVD, Blu-Ray discs would cost $30-40 right now. Thankfully you can find most of them much cheaper.
OTOH it takes a lot of savings on Blu-Ray discs to cover the expense of an HD-DVD player should you want to watch something that is HD-DVD only. If everything were released in both formats then it would not be an issue, but making the consumers invest in 2 sets of overpriced hardware sucks.
I agree that having to purchase two players could be considered a slight inconvenience, but it is a non-issue for most. The intense competition between the BD and HD-DVD camps has had the effect of each side working diligently to enhance their hardware and media and adding new features more quickly and pricing it more affordably (particularly on the HD-DVD side, where excellent players can be had for less the $200), all in an effort to attract the consumer. I am format neutral with high end players on both sides, which I love. As a result of the format war, the cost of these players is very reasonable. The Toshiba XA2, which I own, is not only an outstanding HD-DVD player, but it has the added benefit of being one of the best standard DVD players ever made. If Blu-ray wins the war and HD-DVD concedes, I believe it will serve to curtail further innovation and increase prices for both hardware and media. For all of the complaining about the format war, I think it has helped the consumer far more than it has hurt.
RE: "Engadget has a mobile media player supporting WiMAX. Bringing city wide broadband to ultraportable devices is the holy grail to proponents of streaming media. Combine that with good battery life and a good interface and we could get really excited about it. Of course, stuff like this usually sounds better than it turns out to be -- that is until Apple decides to try its hand at it."
I haven't been keeping up with this technology. Does this mean WiMAX would allow a user to stream media from his own PC to another wireless device over distances greater than from room to room, or am I reading too much into this (aka wishful thinking)?
But I really hope HD DVD wins the war. Its looked very good for them when the cheap HDDVD players were sold. But you have to have big companys like Warner to back you up. If they truly change over to bluray and abandon hd dvd, then that could be the beginning of the end for hd dvd. Would losing Warner hurt hd dvd that bad though?
Is it just me or is Anandtech’s coverage of CES a complete bore? In case you’re not keeping track, the number of pointless blog entries per writer as are follows:
Anand 6
Manveer 5
Ryan 2
Gary 2
Jarred 1
It’s as if there is a competition to see who can pump out the most asinine entries in a one week period.
Perhaps those numbers tell us that Ryan, Gary and Jarred are busy writing articles, while Anand and Manveer are chilling at CES, trying to beat each other in the contest.

Hey guys...just a quick editorial nit-pick here.I noticed that you're using the word "to" when you mean to use the word "too"...as in "much-to-pricy" should be "much-too-pricey".
Just a nit-pick from my grandma the english teacher...:)

Foxy1,Every single comment you make is negative at this site. Go find another site to complain about because your dribble is getting old.

Not "every single comment" I make is negative. Apparently you missed my remark about Jarred's beauty. And have you never heard of constructive criticism? I'm sure Anand and team appreciate my remarks.

Rather then one big ces update at the end of the day they're doing them through out the day, dont see what the problem is.psychobriggsy - Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - link
I liked the one-per-day articles. They had information, analysis, in-line pictures and specifications. They've gone backwards to being a picture book.

I have to say that I also preferred the 'one article per day' coverage of CES. Each to his own.Cheers, Beastie.
